Choir Camp Recap

Choir Camp 2023

Joyous Success

The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, always looking to promote appreciation and love for beautiful liturgy, now has its own youth programs to enrich the next generation’s understanding of liturgical music. This June 19–23, the first-ever Choir Camp, for students 7 to 18 years old, saw a high turnout and proceeded successfully. Under the guidance of three experienced music instructors, including the Shrine’s own Sacred Music Director Scott Turkington, approximately 96 students spent their mornings learning to sing Church music on an age-appropriate level. Daily sessions ran from 9:15 a.m. to 12 p.m., with a break in the middle. The students also went on each day to sing for the 12:15 p.m. Mass in the Shrine Church, thereby applying in practice their new knowledge of music and liturgy.

Next Year!

The Choir Camp is to be offered every summer at the Shrine, along with its twin ministry to youth, the Chant Camp for high school students, which will take place this year August 14–18. With these programs, the Shrine’s music department works to help young Catholics discover the riches of liturgical music, with its power for raising the heart to God, in a setting of joyful camaraderie.
