MERCY in the Scriptures!

The Mercy of God is sung by Our Lady, the Mother of Mercy, and throughout the Scriptures!

Growing list as we encounter mercy in the Word of God, prayed in the Liturgy of the Hours, in the celebration of Holy Mass, and in other prayers/devotions.

Following are links to mercy in Sacred Scripture (the list is not complete – there are many other places that mercy is found, in both the Old and New Testament, particularly in the psalms that we pray in the Divine Office):

  • But in your great mercy you did not put an end to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful God.   Nehemiah 9:30-32
  • The LORD has heard my cry for mercy; the LORD accepts my prayer. Psalm 6:8-10
  • In my alarm I said, “I am cut off from your sight!” Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help.  Psalm 31:21-23
  • I love the LORD, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy.  Psalm 116:1-3
  • Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.   Isaiah 55:6-8
  • In all their distress he too was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.  Isaiah 63:8-10
  • For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.  Hosea 6:5-7
  • Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy.   Micah 7:17-19
  • “Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘I will return to Jerusalem with mercy, and there my house will be rebuilt. And the measuring line will be stretched out over Jerusalem,’ declares the LORD Almighty.   Zechariah 1:15-17
  • Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”   Mark 5:18-20
  • His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.  Luke 1:49-51
  • Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.  Luke 1:57-59
  • Because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven.   Luke 1:77-79
  • For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”   Romans 9:14-16
  • For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.   Romans 11:31-33

  • Indeed he was ill, and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow.   Philippians 2:26-28

  • He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.   Titus 3:4-6
  • Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.   Hebrews 4:15-16
  • But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.   James 3:16-18
  • As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.  James 5:10-12
  • Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.   1 Peter 2:9-11
  • Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.  Jude 1:20-22
