Marian Catechist Apostolate
From the beginning, the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe was meant to be a center of catechesis, even as Our Lady of Guadalupe provides an extraordinary catechesis on the mystery of the Redemptive Incarnation by her image and her words to Saint Juan Diego and his uncle Juan Bernardino. After the apparitions and the building of the chapel for her miraculous image, Saint Juan Diego became Our Lady’s catechist at her Shrine on Tepeyac Hill.
The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe at La Crosse wishes to continue Our Lady’s catechetical mission, as did her faithful messenger, Saint Juan Diego, as a center for the spiritual and doctrinal formation of catechists, after the plan of the Servant of God Father John A. Hardon, S.J., founder of the Marian Catechist Apostolate.
The mission of the Marian Catechist Apostolate is to form and nurture catechists for the teaching and sharing of the Catholic Faith. Marian Catechists must be heroic souls whose spiritual and doctrinal formation equips them for active participation in the new evangelization of America. Understanding that the foundation of all true and effective catechesis is a vibrant spiritual life, the spiritual formation of each Marian Catechist is vitally important; our efforts to share the Faith will be futile unless our lives attest to its beauty and richness. We become authentic witnesses to Our Lord Jesus Christ through a holiness of life and a life of prayer that develops and is nurtured slowly over time.
When Servant of God Father John A. Hardon, S.J. visited the future site of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1999, a year before his death, he was so enthusiastic about the plans for the Shrine, that he asked to visit the site of the Shrine Church, so that he could bless the site. Today the international headquarters of the Marian Catechist Apostolate is located at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Essential to the catechetical work of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the eventual construction of the Father John A. Hardon, S.J. Marian Catechist Apostolate Center and Retreat House so that it may more perfectly fulfill its catechetical mission.
